Dancing for the Terminally ill

Dance instructor, Tracey Barnes from Smartdanceworks/Dancing for Health, based in Derbyshire has created a partner dance programme for use within the hospice environment for people diagnosed with a terminal illness.

The Dancing for Health programme recently debuted at St Lukes’s Hospice, Sheffield, on April 27th, 2016. St Luke’s is the first Hospice in the UK to offer partner dancing as one of their physical activity services.

The programme is aimed at people who wouldn’t ordinarily be able to go along to a public dance class, but can now enjoy being able to learn to dance within the safe and familiar environment of the hospice. The participants only need a partner, whether their own partner, family member or a friend. The class will focus on learning something new together in a fun and relaxed small group. No previous dance experience is necessary.

The programme has been developed working with the Hospice’s physiotherapists and is designed to cater for the needs of the people with less mobility or restriction in movement.
